Frequently Asked Questions
-
A speech-language pathologist, often referred to as an SLP, is a highly trained healthcare professional specializing in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of communication and swallowing disorders. They hold advanced degrees in speech-language pathology and are licensed by regulatory bodies, such as CASLPO in Ontario.
Speech-language pathologists work with individuals of all ages, tailoring interventions to address specific speech, language, voice, fluency, and swallowing challenges. Their expertise extends to various settings, including schools, hospitals, private practices, and rehabilitation centers, with the ultimate goal of enhancing an individual's ability to communicate effectively and participate fully in daily life.
-
In many cases, a referral from a doctor is not required to receive speech therapy. Speech-language pathologists are often considered primary healthcare providers, meaning individuals can seek their services directly without a referral.
However, there may be exceptions in certain insurance plans. It is recommended to check with your insurance company to confirm their policies regarding access to speech therapy services.
-
Speech therapy is not typically covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP). However, there may be exceptions for specific medical conditions or situations where speech therapy is deemed medically necessary.
In most cases, individuals may need to seek coverage through private health insurance plans, workplace benefits, or other government programs. It is advisable to check with your specific insurance provider for information on coverage options and potential reimbursement for speech therapy services.
-
We recommend that you check with your health insurance provider to determine if speech therapy services are covered under your plan. Please confirm with your insurance the requirements they have. As well, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) recognizes SLPs as medical practitioners for the purposes of the medical expense tax credit. You may be able to claim expenses for which you have not received reimbursement from other sources as a medical expense on your income tax return.

Scheduling an appointment is easy. You can reach us by phone or email, and we will work with you to find a convenient time for assessment or therapy sessions. We are here to make the process as seamless as possible for you.
-
During your first session, we'll begin with a comprehensive questionnaire that delves into your developmental, medical, and social history. This crucial step provides valuable context for understanding your specific communication needs. Following the questionnaire, we proceed with a thorough assessment to further pinpoint areas of focus. This assessment lays the foundation for crafting a personalized treatment plan tailored to your unique requirements and goals.
-
Before your first session, gather pertinent medical and developmental history, including previous assessment reports for speech therapy and from relevant professionals (e.g., audiology, occupational therapy, etc.).
Additionally, share any personal observations or concerns you may have. If you have specific communication goals, discuss them with your speech-language pathologist during the initial consultation. This open dialogue will enable us to tailor the therapy approach effectively.
-
The number of speech therapy sessions needed varies widely depending on individual factors, such as the nature and severity of the communication disorder, the specific goals set for therapy, and the individual's progress.
After an initial assessment, your speech-language pathologist will provide a personalized treatment plan, including an estimated timeline and session frequency. Regular progress evaluations will help determine if adjustments are needed. Open communication with your therapist will ensure that your therapy plan aligns with your unique needs and goals.
-
The frequency of therapy sessions can vary based on individual needs and the recommendations of your speech-language pathologist. It's common for therapy sessions to be scheduled once a week, but in some cases, more frequent sessions may be recommended, such as two or three times a week.
The session frequency will depend on factors like the severity of the communication disorder, your availability, and the pace at which you are making progress. Your therapist will work with you to determine the most appropriate session schedule to achieve your therapy goals effectively.
-
The length of therapy sessions may vary based on individual needs, with the most common duration being one hour. Sessions can range between 30 minutes to two hours, allowing for flexibility in addressing specific communication goals and accommodating varying attention spans and needs.
